This ambitious project brings together citizen science, collaborative working and education to identify, assess and protect ponds across the Howardian Hills, helping to build a better understanding of these important freshwater habitats and the wildlife they support.
The importance of ponds
Ponds may be small, but at their best they are bursting with freshwater life. Collectively, they support more species of macroinvertebrates and plants than lakes or rivers, including greater numbers of rare and uncommon species. But sadly, ponds are one of the UK’s most threatened freshwater habitats.
Ponds are an important part of the landscape of the Howardian Hills, providing a network of small freshwater habitats that can support wildlife across the area. However, we still have much to learn about where ponds are located, their condition and the species they support.
Through the project, we will identify, assess and protect ponds across the Howardian Hills, while also improving understanding of these vital habitats. Our work will include species surveys, water-quality testing and opportunities for local people to learn more about ponds, the wildlife they support and how they can be protected and managed.

Surveying ponds across the Howardian Hills
Trained volunteers will undertake species surveys focusing on identifying Common Frog, Common Toad and Emerald Damselfly, alongside water testing to help assess the quality of each pond. Together, these surveys will build a clearer picture of the health of the ponds across the Howardian Hills.
The results from these surveys will enable us to create a new Howardian Hills Priority Pond Map. Priority Ponds are waterbodies that have a particularly high conservation value, usually because they support important freshwater species or rare community types. Many Priority Ponds have yet to be identified, so our surveys will help us locate them and enable their future protection and management.

Please use the form below to register your interest to volunteer for clean water and species surveys. We are also looking for landowners who have ponds that they would be happy for our team and volunteers to survey.

Improving freshwater knowledge
Alongside the practical and scientific work, we will also deliver a programme of professional development courses to support volunteers, land managers and contractors in developing their knowledge and skills around pond creation, management and freshwater ecology.
Additionally, we will work with schools to host events, from creative pond themed workshops to pond dipping visits. School pupils will create their own container ponds, and these mini habitats will be mapped through the National Education Nature Park, leaving a legacy in school grounds.
By combining citizen science, partnership working and educational opportunities, the Howardian Hills Pondscape Project will not only protect ponds across the landscape. but also help more people to discover, value and care for the freshwater nature on their doorstep.
