We're exploring ways to reduce flood risk and improve the natural environment across four catchments in northern Buckinghamshire.
Working with landowners, local communities and partner organisations, the project will identify places where natural flood management features such as ponds, wetlands, leaky barriers and restored floodplains could help slow the flow of water during heavy rainfall.
These measures can help reduce downstream flooding. Additionally, the project will look to deliver wider benefits that increase biodiversity, improve water quality, and build climate resilience.
Where we're working
The project covers four catchments in northern Buckinghamshire:
- Beachampton Brook
- Padbury Brook (The Twins)
- River Great Ouse (Brackley to Buckingham)
- River Great Ouse (Buckingham to Cosgrove)
Within these catchments, the project will focus on areas where natural flood management has the greatest potential to reduce flood risk and provide wider environmental benefits.
Why is this project needed?
Flooding has affected communities across northern Buckinghamshire for many years. Records show significant flooding in Buckingham dating back to the early 1800s, with more recent flooding affecting Buckingham, Thornborough, Gawcott and Beachampton during September 2024.
As our climate changes, heavy rainfall is expected to become more frequent and intense, increasing the risk of flooding. Alongside protecting communities, there is an opportunity to restore rivers, wetlands and other natural habitats that support wildlife and improve the health of our landscapes.
The project will focus on five communities where there is a history of flooding and opportunities to deliver natural flood management: Thornborough, Thornton, Gawcott, Beachampton, and Nash.
What is natural flood management?
Natural flood management uses natural processes to help slow, store and absorb water across the landscape before it reaches rivers and towns. Rather than relying solely on engineered flood defences, these measures work with nature to reduce flood risk while providing additional benefits for wildlife, water quality and the wider environment.
