People and protected species to benefit from new River Irfon catchment project

One of the best remaining freshwater landscapes in Britain will receive more protection, thanks to a new project led by wildlife conservation charity Freshwater Habitats Trust. The Irfon catchment in mid-Wales is the focus for the initiative, which is funded by the Nature Networks Programme, delivered by the Heritage Fund, on behalf of the Welsh Government.
Running until 2026, the River Irfon Catchment project will enhance freshwater habitats for wildlife in the River Irfon, its tributaries and floodplains. Working with local landowners, Freshwater Habitats Trust will reduce pollution, protect and create wetland habitats to increase the range of freshwater plant and animals in the catchment, which stretches from Abergwesyn to Builth Wells.
The project will focus on protecting wetland Sites of Special Scientific Interest (SSSIs) in the River Irfon catchment. Freshwater Habitats Trust will work with Natural Resources Wales to identify sites that could be improved through management.
Freshwater Habitats Trust will create three new floodplain wetland mosaic habitats, building a network of ponds and pools on historic floodplains. The charity will also establish 20 new priority ponds in the catchment. Priority ponds are recognised nationally for having particularly high conservation value and supporting important freshwater species.
Local people will help secure the future of 10 endangered freshwater plant species, by growing them at home before they are planted out at freshwater and wetland sites across the Irfon catchment. Freshwater Habitats Trust will also work with farmers and landowners to reduce pollution across 2,500 hectares of priority freshwater wetland habitats.
With high quality, clean freshwater habitats, the Irfon has one of Wales’ last three remaining populations of the internationally-endangered Freshwater Pearl Mussel, a species on the verge of extinction in Wales. This project will enhance efforts to save this population, as well as supporting other declining freshwater species, such as Atlantic Salmon, Sea Lamprey and Curlew, as well as Red-listed plants.
The project will create two new jobs in the area and provide opportunities for two new trainees to develop the skills for a career in conservation.
This new project begins as the charity starts to build the Freshwater Network – a national network of wilder, wetter, cleaner, more connected habitats to reverse the decline in freshwater biodiversity.

Freshwater Habitats Trust has been working in the Irfon catchment since 2020, and for many years in other parts of Wales. Through its Welsh Government funded Irfon Catchment Resilient Freshwater Habitats project, the charity has collaborated with local landowners and communities to monitor water quality and carry out species monitoring.
Freshwater Habitats Trust CEO Professor Jeremy Biggs said: “Freshwaters are among the most threated part of the natural environment. Recent controversy over the condition of freshwaters in Wales has emphasised how, even in a comparatively rural landscape, these habitats face considerable pressures from land and water use.
“In the Irfon catchment we have an opportunity to make a difference. The catchment still has many clean water habitats and a wide range of freshwater species. By acting now to reduce pollution and create and restore habitats, we can protect the catchment from further decline.
“We are very grateful to our funders for giving us the opportunity to build on our previous work in the River Irfon catchment and to the many local people, who are supporting us to improve the freshwater environment for wildlife and people.”
Geraint Watkins, chair of the project added: “We welcome this new funding to continue our work in the Irfon catchment. Through this project we will continue involving the farming and rural community in protect wildlife and reduce water pollution. We’ll also focus on increasing local awareness of the water environment as well as creating new habitats for freshwater wildlife.”

Bydd un o’r tirweddau dwr croyw gorau sydd ar ôl ym Mhrydain yn cael mwy o warchogaeth diolch i brosiect newydd a arweiniwyd gan yr elusen cadwraeth bywyd gwyllt Ymddiriedolaeth Cynefinoedd Dwr Croyw Dalgylch Irfon yng nghanolbarth Cymru yw ffocws y fenter, a ariennir gan y Rhaglen Rhwydweithiau Natur, a ddarperir gan y Gronfa Treftadaeth ar ran Llywodraeth Cymru.
Yn rhedeg tan 2026, bydd prosiect dalgylch Afon Irfon yn gwella cynefinoedd dwr croyw ar gyfer bywyd gwylltyn afon Irfon, ei llednentydd â’i gorlifdiroedd. Trwy weithio gyda thirfeddianwyr lleol, bydd yr Ymddiriedolaeth yn lleihau llygredd, yn diogelu Safleoedd Gwlyptir o Ddiddordeb Gwyddonol Arbennig, a chreu cynefinoedd gwlyptir newydd i gynyddu’r ystod o blanhigion ac anifeiliaid dwr croyw yn y dalgylch, sy’n ymestyn o Abergwesyn i Lanfair-ym-Muallt.
Bydd y prosiect yn canolbwyntio’n benodol ar warchod Safleoedd Gwlyptir o Ddiddordeb Gwyddonol Arbennig gan weithio gyda thirfeddianwyr lleol a Chyfoeth Naturiol Cymru i nodi safleoedd sydd angen rheolaeth ychwanegol i gynnal eu cymunedau bywyd gwyllt arbennig.
Bydd Yr Ymddiriedolaeth yn creu try chynefin mosaig gwlyptir gorlifdir newydd, gan ddatblygu rhwydwaith o byllau ar orlifdiroedd hanesyddol. Bydd yr elusen hefyd yn sefydlu 20 pwll blaenoriaeth newydd yn y dalgylch. Mae pyllau gyda blaenoriaeth yn cael eu cydnabod yn genedlaethol am fod gyda gwerth cadwraeth arbennig o uchel ac yn cynnal rhywogaethau dwr croyw pwysig.
Bydd pobl leol yn helpu i sicrhau dyfodol 10 rhywogaeth o blanhigion dwr croyw sydd mewn perygl, trwy eu tyfu gartref cyn iddynt gael eu plannu allan mewn safleoedd dwr croyw a gwlyptir ar draws dalgylch Irfon. Bydd yr Ymddiriedolaeth hefyd yn gweithio gyda ffermwyr a thirfeddianwyr i leihau llygredd ar draws 2,500 hectar o gynefinoedd gwlyptir dwr croyw gyda blaenoriaeth.
Gyda chynefinoedd dwr croyw glân o ansawdd uchel, mae gan yr Irfon un o’r tair poblogaeth olaf yng Nghymru o’r Fisglen Berlog sydd mewn perygl rhyngwladol, rhywogaeth sydd ar fîn diflannu yng Nghymru. Bydd y prosiect hwn yn gwella ymdrechion i achub y boblogaeth, yn ogystal a chynnal rhywogaethau dwr croyw eraill sy’n dirywio, megis Eof yr Iwerydd, Lamprai’r Môr a’r Gylfinir, yn ogystal a phlanhigionar y Restr Goch.
Bydd y prosiect yn creu dwy swydd newydd yn yr ardal ac yn darparu cyfleoedd i ddau hyfforddai newydd ddatblygu’r sgiliau ar gyfer gyrfa ym maes cadwraeth.
Mae’r prosiect newydd hwn yn dechrau wrth i’r elusen ddechrau adeiladu’r Rhwydwaith Dwr Croyw – rhwydwaith cenedlaethol o gynefinoedd fwy gwyllt, gwlypach, glanach a mwy cysylltiedig i wrthdroi dirywiad mewn bioamrywiaeth dwr croyw.
Mae’r Ymddiriedolaeth wedi bod yn gweithio yn nalgylch Irfon ers 2020 and am nifer o flynyddoedd mewn rhannau eraill o Gymru hefyd.
Trwy eu prosiect Cynefinoedd Dwr Croyw Gwydn Dalgylch Irfon a ariennir gan Lywodraeth Cymru, mae’r elusen wedi cydweithio â thirfeddianwyr lleol a chymunedau i fonitro ansawdd dwr a monitor rhywogaethau.
Dywedodd PSG yr Ymddiriedolaeth, yr Athro Jeremy Biggs:”Mae dyfroedd croyw ymhlith y rhan o’r amgylched naturiol sydd o dan y bygythiad mwyaf. Mae dadlau diweddar ynghylch cyflwr dyfroedd croyw wedi pwysleisio sut, hyd yn oed mewn tirwedd gymharol wledig, bod y cynefinoeddhyn yn wynebu pwysau sylweddol yn sgil defnydd tir a dwr.
“Yn nalgylch Irfon mae gennym ni gyfle i wneud gwahaniaeth. Mae gan y dylgylch lawer o gynefinoedd dwr glân o hyd ac amrywiaeth eang o rywogaethau dwr croyw. Trwy weithredu nawr i leihau llygredd a chreu ac adfer cynefinoedd, gallwn warchod y dalgylch rhag dirywiad pellach.
“Rydym yn ddiolchgar iawn i’n cyllidwyr am roi’r cyfle i ni adeiladu ar ein gwaith blaenorol yn nalgylch afon Irfon ac i’r llu o bobl lleol sy’n ein cefnogi i wella’r amgylchedd dwr croyw ar gyfer bywyd gwyllt a phobl”.
Ychwanegodd Geraint Watkins, cadeirydd y prosiect:”Rydym yn croesawu’r cyllid newydd hwn i barhau â’n gwaith yn nalgylch Irfon. Trwy’r prosiect hwn byddwn yn parhau i gynnwys y gymuned amaethyddol a gwledig i warchod bywyd gwyllt a lleihau llygredd dwr. Byddwn hefyd yn canolbwyntio ar gynyddu ymwybyddiaeth loel o’r amgylchedd dwr yn ogystal a chreu cynefinoedd newydd ar gyfer bywyd gwyllt dwr croyw”.
