State of Nature

Freshwater and wetlands – our ponds, lakes, rivers, streams, ditches, canals, reservoirs, reedbeds, fens and marshes – occupy just 3% of the UK’s land surface, but support around 10% of our species. Yet, these habitats and the species they support are amongst the most threatened part of the natural world. In Britain, 80% of ponds are in poor condition and there are virtually no high quality, natural rivers and lakes left.

For the first time ever, the UK’s wildlife organisations have joined forces to undertake a health check of nature in the UK and its Overseas Territories.
